Sequelitis

Hollywood is suffering the same fate as television shows and music now a days- few original ideas. Every year the number of sequels has grown and grown. Last year, all of the top 5 movies, and 9 of the 10 top movies were sequels. Ten years before in 2001, 3 of the top 10 movies were sequels. The movie industry is suffering from "sequelitis."
Studios are relying too much on sequels, prequels, and remakes to bring in revenues; faith is thinning on original ideas, unless they are based on existing properties. The last time an original movie was #1 for the year was 2009 with Avatar; before that was 2002 with Spider Man.
There are a bottomless pit of sequels that have been announced lately. Few of the first movies for these sequels haven't even been released yet. Chronicle 2, Project X 2, Journey 3, Fast 6- and 7, Mission Impossible 5, Tintin 2, Dragon Tattoo 2, 21 Jump Street 2, Gnomeo and Juliet 2, Spongebob Squarepants 2, Thor 2, Paranormal Activity 4, and Taken 2- which is released on my birthday. Is this enough? No? Okay there's also Die Hard 5, Avatar 2 and 3, Despicable Me 2, Hobbit 2, Ghostbusters 3, Hangover 3, Terminator 5, Star Trek 2, Scary Movie 5, Monsters Inc 2, Wolverine 2, Smurfs 2, Iron Man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean 5, Cloudy With Meatballs 2, Spider Man 5, Grown Ups 2, How To Train Your Dragon 2, Hunger Games 2 and 3, Avengers 2, and Transformers 4.
There's a few more, but I didn't want to go overboard. This may not seem like a lot of sequels, but trust me, Hollywood will add on. Even though I feel many of these are unneeded, I am still anticipating some, and if you are too, you can expect the majority of these in 2013 and 2014! Hooray!

  1. A side note: Disney is pretty much forcing Pixar to make sequels, since they own the rights to it. That is why they are making Monsters Inc. 2 and why they made Cars 2. They really aren't letting them have their own ideas, at least not as much. From a business standpoint, having a film made on an idea already popular in our minds is a safe bet, but I would prefer seeing original films. And also, Spider Man is a reboot, not necessarily a sequel, but it still follows the same principle of general knowledge and popularity of why sequels are made.

  3. Yep Scott. Toy Story 3 was okay since it was such a great movie, but everyone knows Cars 2 was only made because Cars is Pixars #1 in merchandise sales. And yeah Spider Man is a reboot, but I was talking about the sequel to this one, theyve already planned it for May 2014.
